Passage  1

开始时间:____________

The Volunteer Farm, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, looks like a lot of other farms with rows of pepper, tomato and cucumber plants. But nothing harvested here goes to market. Fresh food from it is harvested to feed the hunger.

Retired government worker Bob Blair owns the land, but leases it to the Volunteer Farm of Shenandoah for $1 a year. As its name suggests, the farm relies on volunteers to plant and harvest. They come from nearly every US state and many foreign countries.

One day, a group from Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church drove more than 100 kilometers to collect potatoes from the field. The majority of the volunteers were children.

“After a few hour’ working, the children go to bed extremely tired. But they know in a very physical way that they have made a difference,” a Church leader said. The church has been volunteering at the farm for nearly a decade.

Food from the Volunteer Farm is distributed to large food banks where the hungry can freely get what they need.

So far, the Volunteer Farm has harvested 5,500 kilograms of vegetables and the food will keep coming.

Answer the following questions.

1. Who is the owner of the Volunteer Farm?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Where do the volunteers come from?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. Where is food from the Volunteer Farm distributed?

Passage  2

开始时间:____________

The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and for the environment. Those findings come from a new report in the journal Nature. There are ways to solve this diets-health-environment problem. But they will require a change in eating habits.

David Tilman is a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota. In the study, he examined information from 100 countries to learn what people ate and how diet affected health. He recorded a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations industrialized, population increased and earnings rose, more people began to choose what has been called the Western diet.

The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating these foods people began to get fatter and sicker. Overweight people are at greater risk for diseases like diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

Diabetes is very common in the United States and across Europe. Heart disease is a major cause of death in Western countries. Unfortunately when people become industrialized, if they adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these same health impacts, and in some cases if you are Asian, you will suffer more than those in the West.

And, a diet bad for human beings, it seems, is also bad for the environment. As the world population grows, experts say more forests will become farmland for crops or grass lands for cattle. These areas will be needed to meet the increasing demand for food.

Mr. Tilman calls the link between diet, the environment and human health a “trilemma”. This is a play on the word “dilemma”-- problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind.

4. David Tilman found when people earned more, they began to___________.

A. enjoy the Western diet.

B. choose foods of high quality.

C. spend more money on foods.

D. give up their good eating habits.

5. what does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?

A. The risk of various diseases.

B. The trouble of being overweight.

C. The disadvantages of the Western diet.

D. The causes of getting fatter and sicker.

6. It can be inferred from paragraph 4 that ___________?

A. the Western diet is more harmful to Asian people

B. diabetes is the main disease in the United States

C. the Western diet has caused many deaths in Asia

D. heart disease is more serious than diabetes in Europe

7. To solve this problem, Mr. Tilman advises us to __________.

A. meet the increasing demand for food.

B. learn the meaning of the word “trilemma”

C. change our eating habits and avoid the Western diet.

D. find the link between diet, the environment and human health.

We Americans have an expression: “if you give a person a fish, they will eat for a day. If you teach a person to fish, they can eat for a lifetime.” One way to explain this is that helping people grow their own food is a better way to fight hunger.

HarvestPlus is teaching people around the world how to grow what are called “smart” crops. In 2006, HarvestPlus workers provided orange sweet potato plants for people in 24 Mozambique villages. Farmers in Mozambique had been planting white and yellow sweet potatoes. They have very little vitamin A. However, one small orange sweet potato has a full day’s supply of Vitamin A.

Without enough vitamin A, people fae an increased risk of getting a serious disease or dying from infections. Economist Alan de Brauw talks about the HarvestPlus project in Mozambique. “About 70 percent of kids under the age of five didn’t take enough vitamin A. We have this huge need for new solutions. So we plan to do something through agriculture to increase the amount of vitamin A in the diet.”

Mr. De Brauw said according to a study the potatoes had a surprising influence on the health of children. Chilcren eating orange sweet potatoes had 40 percent fewer cases of diarrhea. Among children under the age of three, the difference was 50 percent.

Some experts say vitamin supplement can increase the supply of vitamin A. But Anne Herforth, an expert on global food security and nutrition, said, “Taking vitamin supplements is a Band-Aid solution--a short-term solution to a long-term problem--to the serious problem.

Passage 7

开始时间:____________

Four facts about body language

If you want to become a “master” of nonverbal communication, there a few things you need to know.

Body language is not a “language”

There is no dictionary for nonverbal communication. The meaning of a particular nonverbal cue, such as a certain gesture or eye movement, can depend on the context the individual, and the relationship between the sender and the receiver.

Certain facial expressions have universal meanings.

There is good evidence that the basic facial expressions of anger, happiness, sadness, and fear are used similarly across cultures. We can recognize a happy face on almost anyone in the world.

It takes one to know one

There are individual differences in people’s abilities to communicate nonverbally. This is a big part of our emotional intelligence. Certain people are very skilled at clearly expressing themselves nonverbally -- sending clear messages of emotions. Others are very good at “reading” others’ nonverbal cues. These two abilities are closely related. In general, a good sender is more likely to be a good receiver.

  Lie detection is almost impossible.

There is a belief that we can tell if a person is lying through body language. For example, some believe that a liar can’t look you in the eye or shows nervous gestures. But the reality is that it’s nearly impossible to accurately detect lies simply through reading someone’s body language.

Read the passage and fill in the blanks.

24. The ___________________ of people all over the world are similar.

25. People’s abilities to communicate nonverbally are ________________.

26. You cannot judge a person only through _____________________.

Passage  10

  开始时间:____________

Thanksgiving is one of the biggest American holidays. And Thanksgiving dinner is the center of the holiday. And the star of Thanksgiving dinner is the turkey. You may be wondering why the word “turkey” describes both a country and a bird that Americans eat for Thanksgiving dinner. Many think the bird comes from the nation of Turkey. But the turkey is not from Turkey. In fact, the bird being called by that name is one big mistake. It is a case of mistaken identity.

“Turkey” has meant “the land of the Turks” since ancient times. The word turkey, referring to the bird, first appeared in the English language around 1540. There is an African bird called the guinea fowl. Portuguese traders brought the foreigh bird to Europe through North Africa. They came to Europe through Turkish lands. So, the British thought of the bird as a “Turkish chicken”. They mistakenly called the male bird the “turkey cock”. They called the female bird the “turkey hen”.

The guinea fowl has dark feathers with white spots. The misunderstanding over the word turkey happened because of the birds that look similar. When the Europeans moved to North America, they saw a North American bird that looked like the guinea fowl. They thought that it was the guinea fowl, which at that time was called the “turkey” and so they gave it the same name even though it has no connection at all wigh the country Turkey.

Another interesting fact about the turkey is that it almost became the national bird of the United States. But today, of course, you will see the bald eagle on the Presidential Seal of the United States. Founding father Benjamin Franklin did not think the eagle was a good bird. He thought the eagle was lazy and bad because it stole food from other bird. On the coutrary, he thouht that the turkey was a more respectable bird and a true original native of America. It shoud be the perfect choice for the new country.

35. What can we learn about the turkey?

A. It is the most popular word in America.

B. It means a bird from the country Turkey.

C. It is a special bird from the country Turkey.

D. It’s the symbol of Thankgiving Day in America.

36. Who first regarded the guinea fowl as a bird from Turkey?

3. When the Europeans arrived in North America, they _________?

A. brought the guinea fowl

B. made the guinea fowl more famous

C. sold North American birds to Turkey

D. named a North American bird b mistake

37. Which of the follwoing is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The bald eagle looks like the guinea fowl.

B. American don’t like the bald eagle at all.

C. The turkey is a common bird in North Africa.

D. Benjamin Franklin thought highly of the turkey.

38. What’s the passage mainly about?

The Cervantino Festival(塞万提斯艺术节)is held every year in the city of Guanajuato, Mexico. The festival, which began in 1972, is in honor of Miguel de Cervantes, author of the famous Spanish novel Don Quixate de la Mancha.

  Cervantino’s international atmosphere

At its heart, Cervantino is a cultural festival. It takes place during October, lasting a full month. Over the course of the month, hundreds of cultural events are held in the city. The international nature of the festival makes it a popular tourism destination. Each year, one Mexican state and one international community are invited to be guests of honor ath the festival.

Hotels can be packed weeks or months before the festival starts. So it’s necessary to book your hotel early. The same goes for tickets to events. Passage  14

  开始时间:____________

Train and railway expressions worked their way into American English over a century ago. Many of those terms are still being used today.

Sometimes railroad tracks would not join up in a town but divide it in two. One side of the tracks might be good, while the other side was “not-so-good”. If you say someone is from the wrong side of the tracks, it means they are from the bad side of town.

To go off track means to pay attention to your goal or purpose but getting sidetracked is just the opposite.

Talking about train tracks, a rail is a single piece of steel that is part of the larger railway. Some rails are dangerous to touch. In some cities, a third rail provides power to a subway train, usually operating underground; electricity passes through the rail. The third rail is a problem which can fuel a heated debate. At a party, religion or politics could be third rail topics. Talking about them could kill your social life.

Many Americans say things get derailed when they go off track or away from a goal--or when they simply go wrong.

When a train reaches its final stop, we say it as reached the end of the line. If you reach the end of the line you have come to the end of something. Often in old films, this is what the bad guy says just before he kills someone.

A. They are too dangerous to touch.

B. They can easily lighten the atmosphere.

C. They always bring about many disagreements.

D. They are the most important topics on such an occasion.

Volume Two  History and Geography

Passage 1

开始时间:____________

This is a story that happened in Europe in the 17th century. Tulips(郁金香) were introduced into Holland before the 17th century but it did not take long for the flowers to gain popularity among the upper classes. Flowers of such beauty soon became symbols of power and the rich tried their best to lay their hands on some to display them in their gardens. When more people learned of the prices that the rich were willing to pay for tulips, they knew they just found a “get-rich-quick” gold mine.

By 1634, the whole country was so attracted by tulips that all other activities almost came to a stop. People were trading in tulips and even buying and selling bulbs(球茎). At that time, one rare bulb cost as much as ten tons of cheese.

Many made a fortune in the beginning. As the prices moved in one direction, they only needed to buy low and sell high, buy high and sell higher. After the gains, confidence rose and many sold away all their property in order to invest more money in tulips, hoping to make more money. The desire was so strong that those who were watching also rushed to the tulip market. Everyone thought that the high demand for tulips would continue forever and prices could only go up because more and more people from all over the world would start to like tulips.

When the prices of tulips was much higher than it should be, few people bought them for planting in their gardens. The real demand for the flowers seemed greater than it really was. Many people were buying them for speculation(投机), not appreciation. In 1637, for some unknown reasons, a group of people suddenly realized the danger. The prices of tulips began to fall and the market crashed. When confidence was destroyed, it could not be recovered and prices kept falling. Soon the nobles and the rich became poor. Cries of suffering were heard everywhere in Holland.

Passage2

    开始时间:____________

The most common symbol of a nation in the modern world is also one of the most ancient. With a clear symbolic meaning, the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark buildings, ships and other vehicles related to a country.

The national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive (原始的) artifact. It is, rather, the product of thousands of years' development. Historians believe that it had two major ancestors, of which the earlier served to show wind direction.

Early human beings used very fragile (脆弱的) houses and boats. Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers. People's food supplies were similarly vulnerable. Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depended on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another.

Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was therefore reasonable. Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems(图腾) before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves.

These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked: The king of China around 1000 BC was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab Lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.

Passage 3

开始时间:____________

New archaeological discoveries suggest that trade between Europe and Asia along the Silk Road probably began many centuries earlier than once thought. The findings, coupled with a range of scientific and historical research, could add a fascinating new page to the epic of the Silk Road.

The latest and most surprising discovery is pieces of silk found in the hair of an Egyptian mummy from about 1,000 BC, long before regular traffic on the Silk Road and at least one thousand years before silk was previously thought to be used in Egypt.

The official origin of East-West commerce along the road is usually placed in the late 2nd century BC when an agent of the Chinese Emperor Wudi returned from a dangerous secret mission(使命) across the western desert into the remote Central Asia. The agent, Zhang Qian, travelled as far as Afghanistan and brought back knowledge of even more distant lands such as Persia, Syria and a place known as Lijien, perhaps Rome. Historians have called this one of the most important journeys in ancient times. His journey opened the way for what have been thought to be the first indirect contacts between the ancient world's two superpowers, China and Rome. Chinese silk, first traded to central Asian tribes for war horses and to the Parthians of old Persia in exchange for acrobats and ostrich eggs, was soon finding its way through a network of merchants to the luxury markets of Rome.

But the new discoveries show that Chinese silk was apparently present in the West long before the Han emperor started organized trade over the Silk Road. The research could change thinking about the early history of world trade and wonder the mystery of just when and how Europe and the Mediterranean lands first became aware of the glorious culture.

originated in the 2nd century BC

B.

extended human migration into eastern Asia

C.

 began a million years ago

D.

Passage 4

  开始时间:____________

AIDS-related illnesses have killed more than 30 million people since 1981. That's half as many deaths as in World War II. And it's not over. An estimated 1.1 million Americans are among the 33 million people worldwide who are now living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Between 1884 and 1924, somewhere near modern-day Kinshasa in West Central Africa, a hunter kills a chimpanzee. Some of the animal's blood enters the hunter's body, possibly through an open wound. The blood carries a virus harmless to the chimp but deadly to humans: HIV.

In June, 1981, the CDC publishes a report from Los Angeles of five young homosexual men with fatal or life-threatening PCP pneumonia. First cases recognized. In 1985, Rock Hudson dies of AIDS. Larry Kramer's AIDS play, "The Normal Heart." shocks New York audiences.

In 1986, for the first time, President Reagan publicly utters the word "AIDS." In 1987, Princess Diana is photographed hugging people with AIDS. Reagan makes his first speech on AIDS. Liberace dies of AIDS. Three years later, Photographer Robert Mapplethorpe dies of AIDS.

In 1988, the first World AIDS DAY is held on Dec. 1. During 1991-1992, the red ribbon is introduced as a symbol of AIDS solidarity(团结一致). But AIDS becomes the leading cause of death in U.S. men aged 25-44 and ten years later, AIDS becomes the leading cause of death worldwide for people aged 15 to 59.

In 2008, for the first time, global AIDS deaths decline. UNAIDS calculates that the global spread of AIDS peaked in 1996 at 3.5 million new infections. Deaths peaked in 2004, at 2.2 million. Yet AIDS Day 2009 brings surprising figures: 2.7 million new HIV infections and 2 million AIDS deaths in the previous year.

Researchers have discovered more than a dozen antibodies that target the HIV virus. They hope that these discoveries will lead to a vaccine that offers long-term protection against AIDS. One antibody in particular, PGT 128, is considered among the most potent and promising—preventing about 70% of viruses from infecting cells in laboratory tests.

12. Why does the author mention the year 1981 in the first paragraph?

A.

Because there is no recorder before 1981.

B.

Because the author thinks 1981 is the first year of a decade.

C.

Because in 1981, the first case of AIDS was confirmed.

D.

Because there was fewer AIDS before 1981, even none.

13. What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.

 HIV: from monkeys to humans.

B.

 A hunter's killing caused HIV.

C.

HIV is harmless to the chimpanzee.

D.

 HIV is deadly to humans.

14. How many famous people died of AIDS mentioned in the passage between 1985 and 1991?

A.

 2.

B.

 3.

C.

 4.

D.

In 2008, AIDS caused most deaths since 1981 and the death began to go down.

C.

In 1986, President Reagan used the word "AIDS" and made a speech on it.

D.

During 2001-2002, AIDS is the leading cause of death in the world aged 15 to 59.

16. What attitude does the author have towards the treatment to AIDS in the future?

A.

 Pessimistic.

Passage 5

开始时间:____________

It has long been known the ancient Egyptian rulers, or pharaohs, were buried with great ceremony and lavish treasures that were to be used in the other world.

Unfortunately, until 1922 no remains of any of the pharaohs or their treasures had ever been found. In that year, however, an archaeologist named Howard Carter and his sponsor, Lord Carnavon, were at last successful. They found the tomb of King Tutankhamen, who was buried 3,200 years ago. King Tut’s tomb was the first fully preserved burial site to be uncovered in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. The two men found the tomb to contain wonderful treasures. Gold figures and magnificent furniture decorated with gold were found in the myriad of secret rooms and tunnels within the pyramid.

The only disappointment for Howard Carter came when he found that King Tut’s body was nothing but dust. Apparently a mistake had been made when the king’s remains were mummified (使成木乃伊). Carter did, however, find 143 pieces of jewelry within the mummy case, mostly made of gold and precious stones.

Actually, despite all the publicity about the remarkable finds in his tomb, Tutankhamen’s reign (统治时期) as pharaoh was short and relatively uneventful. He died when he was just 18 years old.

There is an interesting story that goes along with King Tut’s tomb. According to legend, a powerful curse was placed in it. This curse was to descend on anyone uncovering Tutankhamen’s burial place. Not very long after the discovery, Lord Carnavon, along with several of the workmen, died suddenly.

17The subject of this passage is              .

CHistorically, Tutankhamen’s reign was not very much important.

DThe writer feels it a pity that Lord Carnavon and several of the workmen died

    because of the curse.

19It seems clear that King Tut        .

Awas a great military leader      Bthought a great deal of himself

Cwas afraid of dying          Dwas killed by his enemies

Volume Three   Culture and Custom

Passage 1

开始时间:____________

Children have traditionally been the stars of family portraits—but these days they are increasingly likely to be upstaged(抢镜头) by their pets. Photographers say that there has been a 20 percent rise in demand in the past year for shots featuring not only dogs and cats, but also more unusual animals including horses, cows, sheep—and even ferrets and snails. But it doesn't always come cheap, as parents are paying up to £3,000 for the distinctive images.

Richard Mayfield, creative director at Venture Photography, which runs a nationwide chain of studios, said: "They say never work with children or animals but we think the opposite. Children and animals are unpredictable, and that's great for capturing dynamic(动态的) photographs."

"We always ask clients if they would like to bring any pets along to their shoots as we want to capture the character of the families we photograph, and often their pets help them to relax. We get a lot of domestic pets such as dogs and cats but more unusual pets can be really interesting from a photographer's perspective. This year we've seen lots of rabbits in particular as more and more are kept in the house and so really feel like part of the family."

A glance at these pictures proves just how astonishing the animal magic can be. Toddler Alfie Poutney, from Felixstowe, poses with a green parrot perched on his flat cap; Charlie Wells from Wakefield gives his pony Lucy a gentle kiss; James Corrigan is pictured with his Dutch dwarf rabbit perched in the center of his skateboard; Poppy Hanshaw reaches out to stroke Lego the lamb; and Harry the tortoise provided the main focus for a Home Counties family portrait. But the most unusual image surely has to be Gabriel Pereira from Woking, Surrey, posing with his pet snails Wayne, Lucy and Aaron.

Passage  2

开始时间:____________

Successful people in international business understand the cultures of other countries and learn to change their practices in different cultures. They understand the importance of avoiding business decisions based on misconceptions—mistaken ideas.

One cause of misconceptions is ethnocentrism, the belief that one's own culture's way of doing things is better than the way of other cultures. It's ethnocentrism that leads to failure in international business. To avoid ethnocentrism, it's necessary to study the different elements(组成部分) of culture: language, values and attitudes, and customs and manners.

    Language

A knowledge of the local language can help international business people in four ways. First, people can communicate directly. Second, people are usually more open in their communication with someone who speaks their language. Third, an understanding of the language allows people to infer meanings that are not said directly. Finally, knowing the language helps people to understand the culture better.

    Values and attitudes

Values are people's basic beliefs about the difference between right and wrong, good and bad. An attitude is a way of thinking or acting. Values and attitudes influence international business. For example, many people in the United States believe that chocolate from Switzerland is better than chocolate from other countries, and they buy a lot of it.

    Customs and manners

Customs are common social practices. Manners are ways of acting that the society believes are polite. For example, in the United States, it is the custom to have salad(色拉) before the main course at dinner, not after. It's not acceptable to talk with food in mouth at table. Failure to understand the customs and manners of other countries will bring difficulty selling their products. Orange juice as a breakfast drink of an American company in France doesn't sell well because the French don't usually drink juice with breakfast.

 6. A knowledge of the local language allows international business people                 .

A.

to be more open with their customers

B.

 to communicate without outside help

C.

 to express their thoughts indirectly

D.

to have a better idea of their own culture

 7. The act of many people buying chocolate of Switzerland shows the role of                 .

A.

 manners

B.

 values

C.

 attitudes

D.

 customs

 8. What would be the best title for the text?

A.

 Misconceptions in Business

B.

 Basic Beliefs in Business

C.

 International Business Culture

D.

 Successful International Business

 9. The author's purpose of writing this article is to tell people                 .

A.

how to take a right attitude in business

B.

how to avoid misunderstandings in business

C.

how to use a local language in business

D.

how to act politely and properly in business

Passage  3

Sailing Through History

开始时间:____________

A group of 1,309 passengers boarded the MS. Balmoral on Sunday, in Southampton, England, on a voyage to retrace the path of the Titanic. The Titanic was the biggest ship in the world when it sailed on its ill-fated maiden voyage in 1912. Of the 2,227 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1,500 died. The ship, which was headed to New York City, carried the rich and famous on its first voyage. It also carried immigrants, who were seeking a better life in America.

Relatives of people who sailed on the Titanic, historians, authors and people fascinated by the story of the unsinkable ship, are on the Balmoral. They want to remember the doomed ship and those who died on her first and last voyage. The historic liner had set sail on April 10, 1912, from Southampton. Late at night on April 14, she hit an iceberg. In the early morning hours of April 15, the Titanic sank.

The Balmoral is following Titanic's original route from Southampton. First, the modern-day cruise liner docked in the port of Cherbourg, France, where the Titanic had picked up more passengers. On Monday afternoon, the Balmoral stops in Cobh, Ireland, the Titanic's last port of call before sailing to New York.

Balmoral will then cruise the North Atlantic Ocean to the location where Titanic hit an iceberg that ripped the ship's hull(外壳). On Sunday, April 15, at 2:20 a.m.—the time the Titanic went down—passengers and crew will hold a memorial service. The next two days will be spent in Halifax, Canada, where many victims of the sinking are buried. Then, the Balmoral will reach its final destination in New York City, where Titanic was supposed to dock—but never did.

Until today, several teams of divers have explored the site. They have recovered some items such as dishes and silverware and put them on public display. And more trips are planned to the wreckage in the future. The Titanic and its passengers and crew have been remembered in books, movies and TV programs. Passage 4

开始时间:____________

Historic Hill at Risk of Being Removed From Landscape

It's literally a case of turning a mountain into a molehill.

An entire hill, famed for its archeological heritage and geological significance, is to be removed from the Scottish skyline to make way for a quarry(采石场) under plans being considered by West Dunbartonshire Council.

Sheep Hill, in the Kilpatrick Hills on the Clyde, is the site of ancient Bronze and Iron Age forts which local residents and experts say will be destroyed by the expansion of a stone quarry.

The hill also features in a painting by the 19th-century Scottish artist John Knox, and is used by geology teachers to show how the landscape has been shaped by volcanoes and ice ages.

Allowing the hill to be wiped off the map would be "an act of wanton(荒唐的) destruction of our environment and inheritance", according to Clydebelt, a local environmental group, which is calling for Scottish ministers to intervene to save the hill.

"Sheep Hill is liable(应承担责任的) to be destroyed," said the group's secretary, Sam Gibson. "This would leave a gaping hole in the side of the hill showing the workings of the quarry and fully visible from a distance."

A proposal to revise mineral permission for an existing quarry run by a local firm near Sheep Hill is due to be discussed by West Dunbartonshire Council on Wednesday and has aroused fierce opposition from local groups.

They say that, as well as damaging important archaeological remains and ruining the landscape, expanding the quarry would threaten wildlife and trees. The North Bank Environmental Group has filed a formal complaint to the ombudsman(巡视官) about the council's handling of the development.

The quarry company, William Thompson & Son, which has extracted whinstone at its Sheep Hill quarry for decades did not respond to repeated requests to comment last week.

15. For what is Sheep Hill well-known?

A.

A molehill and its stone quarry.

B.

Its ancient heritage and geological significance.

C.

The site of ancient Bronze and Iron Age.

D.

Its painting by John Knox, a 19th-century artist.

16. The underlined word "intervene" means                  in the 3rd paragraph.

A.

 go inside

B.

 step in

C.

 interview

D.

 interrupt

17. What can we infer from what Sam Gibson said?

A.

It is right to remove Sheep Hill from a distance.

B.

The workings of the quarry can be seen from a distance.

C.

The workings of the quarry would ruin the wholeness and the scenery of the hill.

D.

Too many holes will be opened in the side of the hill after the workings.

18. Why do the local groups oppose the mineral permission?

A.

Because they run the quarry near Sheep Hill and make money from it.

B.

Because the mineral permission will do harm to archaeological remains and the landscape.

C.

Because they don' t agree with the handling of the development of the quarry.

D.

Because they care about not only archaeological remains, landscape but also the wildlife and trees.

19. How did William Thompson & Son react towards the complaint from the locals?

A.

 He had no reaction.

B.

He worried about their production of whinstone.

C.

 He feared to be punished.

D.

He is not satisfied with the ombudsman.

Passage 5

开始时间:____________

“You are going to the United States to live? How wonderful! You are really lucky.“

Perhaps your family and friends said similar things to you when you left home. But is it true all the time? Is your life in the new country always wonderful and exciting?

Specialists say that it isn't easy to get used to life in a new culture. "Culture shock" is the term specialists use when talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. "There are three stages of culture shock," say the specialists. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people, and everything else. In the last stage, the newcomers begin to adjust to their surroundings and, as a result, enjoy their life more.

There are some obvious factors in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be different. The public service systems, the telephone, post office, or transportation maybe difficult to work out. The simplest things seem to be big problems. The language may be difficult.

Who feels culture shock? Everyone does in this way or that. But culture shock surprises most people. Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their home countries and were successful in their community. Coming to a new country, these people find they do not have the same established positions. They find themselves without a role, almost without an identity.

They have to build a new self-image.

Culture shock gives rise to a feeling of disorientation(迷惘). This feeling may be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the strange environment, and create and escape inside their room for a sense of security. As I travel across China, I hope to learn as much as I can about the Chinese people, your history, and your dreams for the future and I hope to help the Chinese people understand more of America’s history, the lessons the American people have drawn from it, and the dreams we hold for the 21st century.

I believe both Chinese and Americans aspire(立志, 有热望) to many of the same things — to provide for our families, to teach our children, to build our communities, to protect our Earth, to shape our own futures, and pass brighter possibilities on to our children.

There may be those and back in America who wonder whether closer ties and deeper friend ship between America and China are good. Clearly, the answer is yes. We have a powerful ability to help each other grow. We can learn much from each other. And as two great nations, we have a special responsibility to the future of the world. The steps we take over the next week can lead to far greater strides for our people in the years ahead.

Here in this city of your magnificent history, we must always remember that we, too, are ancestors(祖先). Someday our children and their children will ask if we did all we could to build just societies and a more peaceful world. Let our monument be their judgement that we did that. Passage 3

开始时间:____________

“American dream? What a lie!” This comment(评论) was made by a Cuban teenage girl. She was attending a huge protest(抗议) in Havana, Cuba, against American immigration laws last Tuesday.

Tens of thousands of people, including Cuba’s President, Fidel Castro, took part in the protest to remember 30 missing Cubans, including 13 children. Their boat was lost in the Florida Straits after setting out from Cuba on November 17. It is one of the worst accidents involving(牵扯到) Cubans being smuggled(偷渡) into the US. Fourteen people died in the sinking of a smuggler’s boat in 1998, and about 40 people died in 1994 when a tugboat sank near Havana. Castro believes that the “Cuban Adjustment Act” is responsible for the 30 people disappearing.

This 1996 law gives special allowances to Cuban immigrants who reach US land by whatever means. It gives them resident’s status(居民身份) and chances to work. It is very different from the US policy to immigrants from other countries. Because it encourages illegal immigration and these types of accidents, some called it “the murderous law”.

The US uses the so-called “dry foot, wet foot” rule. Those found at sea are sent back to Cuba. But those who set foot on US soil are generally allowed to stay. Castro said that the law encourages Cubans to undertake dangerous sea journeys with the hope of living in the US.

The immigration policy of the US has caused many problems between the US and Cuban. The two countries plan to meet next month to discuss immigration issues.

  A. Because they were not allowed to enter the US.

  B. Because their children were missing.

  C. Because they wanted to come back to their homeland.

  D. Because they were against American immigration laws.

 3. Which of the following is right?

  A. “Cuban Adjustment Act” is a Cuban law.

  B. Havana is a place in Cuba.

  C. 43 people disappeared after they set out on November 17.

  4. Why did so many people want to smuggle into the US?

  A. They wanted to live a better life there.

Passage 5

开始时间:____________

Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight, while the French, who consume rich food, continue to stay thin? Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers conclude that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.

According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal.

After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.

In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity — or  extreme overweight — among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% — and is growing.

1.   In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr. Joseph Mercola?

Passage 7

Beijing ---- A recent Chinese blockbuster (轰动的作品) “A World Without Thieves” is based on the experiences of a young migrant worker (民工)carrying 60,000 yuan on a train packed with thievesBut while the image of a warm-hearted but somewhat naive migrant worker may have made film fans chuckle, it’s a sure bet that most of China’s migrant workers are yet to step into a cinema to admire it

“Forty yuan a ticket? I can’t afford it,” said Shen Jie, a migrant worker at a construction site in Dongzhimen, east Beijing

Shen found it hard to remember when he last watched a film, or what it was about“It must be 10 years ago,” he said

Though they are the builders of the nation’s theaters and cinemas, a limited cultural life is common among China’s 120 million migrant workers

Shen arrived from East China’s Zhejiang Province in1991Life was better then; money seemed to come more easily“Now, as more and more workers are rushing to the capital, it’s too hard to earn money, and none of us dare think about watching films,” he said

For many like Shen, the dream is earning enough to pay for their children’s education so they can find jobs in the cities and say goodbye to the hardships of rural life foreverThis drives them to work hard and save as much as possible

With a monthly salary of less than 500 yuan, Shen has to send money home to his little son and silver-haired parents

In Shen’s small dormitory, which he shares with seven other co-workers, there is a well-thumbed copy of a magazine published in 1998

A recent survey by local media revealed that 80 percent of migrant workers spent their spare time sleeping and chatting because of exhaust and a lack of incomeThe same survey found that 47 percent of migrant workers have to work for more than 10 hours a dayAround 40 percent do not even possess a book, and nearly 60 percent say they are dissatisfied with their cultural life

An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simplehelp to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.

In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by allthe program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the busas well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched(发起)the“If All of Seattle Read the Same Book”project in 1998.Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American citiesand even to Hong Kong.

In Chicagothe mayor (市长) appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird  as the first book in the “One BookOne Chicago”program. As a resultreading clubs and neighborhood groups sprang up around the city.Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.

The only problem arose in New Yorkwhere local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in mediumsized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity (一致) can be achieved.Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the pointputting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than into discussion about a book itself.

Passage 9

开始时间:____________

In the United States, crime worries a lot of people. Every year, the number of crimes goes up. And many criminals are young. Most of them—85 percent are boys. They often come from   sad homes, with only one parent or no parents at all. There are problems with alcohol(烈酒) and drugs. There are many young criminals in prison. But prison doesn’t change them —60 to 70 percent will go back to crime when they come out of prison.  One man, Bob Burton, thought of a new idea that travel could help to solve one of the country’s worst problems—crime. In the old days, young men had to live a difficult life on the road. They learned to be strong and brave, and to help their friends in time of danger. This helped them to grow into men. So Bob Burton started “Vision Quest”(寻梦).  The young people on “Vision Quest” all have bad problems. Most of them have already spent time in prison. This is their last chance. Passage 10

A gunman killed 26 people, including 20 young children, at a US school where his mother worked Friday morning in one of the worst school shootings in the country's history. Pupils who were rushed from the building through the terrible scene by police were told to close their eyes.

A police officer said the suspect, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and he was the son of a teacher at the school. The mother, Nancy Lanza, was found dead at home.

The attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School, just two weeks before Christmas, was the latest of several mass shootings in the US in the year of 2012, and it approached the deadly scope of the Virginia Tech University shooting in 2007 that left 32 dead.

This time, many who were killed were young children. Photos from the scene showed students, some of them crying, being escorted by adults through a parking lot in a line, hands on each other's shoulders. Children told their parents they had heard bangs and, at one point, a scream over the intercom(内部通话装置).

State police said 18 children were found dead at the school and two later were declared dead, and six adults were found dead at the scene. They said the shootings occurred in one section of the school but did not give details.

Police said another person was found dead at a second scene—someone who lived with the gunman died.

"Our hearts are broken today," President Barack Obama said. He said the children killed were 5 to 10 years old. He said the nation had been "through this too many times" with recent mass shootings and has to come together to take meaningful action.

 3. From the third paragraph we can infer that                 .

     A.    shooting seldom occurred in elementary schools

     B.    mass shootings usually happened in universities

Overall, Vienna keeps the top spot as the city with the world's best quality of living, also keeping its first place ranking, said the survey came out on Tuesday.

The survey said Canada offers some of the best quality of living in the world with Ottawa ranking 14th, Toronto 15th, Montreal 23rd and Calgary 32nd.

"One of the things that Vancouver has going for is that the other cities do not have its climate," said Mercer Canada's Eleana Rodriguez. "All four of the other Canadian cities that are on the ranking don't have the kind of climate it has, so clearly that's a factor to consider."

Of all the Canadian cities ranked in the top 35 cities in the world, Calgary advanced one ranking and Montreal dropped by one ranking.

"We score quite high," said Rodriguez, market business leader for Mercer Canada in Toronto.

Consulting firm Mercer looked at 39 factors such as a city's political and social environment and its economic and socio-cultural environment, areas in which Canada scored quite well.

The firm also looked at medical and health care, education and access to schools, public transportation, housing and consumer goods, as well as climate.

"Vienna scores high on a number of those areas." Rodriguez said.

The survey also found that Zurich and Auckland of New Zealand were ranked second and third with Munich taking fourth spot.

As the clock ticks down to 21 December, the supposed end of the world according to the Mayan calendar, NASA(美国国家航空航天局) has released a video it hopes will clear up any confusion. The four-minute film is for anyone who might be viewing it on 22 December, the day after the world is supposed to have ended. "If you are watching this video it means one thing, the world didn't end yesterday," the opening narration(叙述) says.

Michael Brody, the man who produced the video, said they released the film early to generate interest around the subject. "We wanted to show people that NASA's sure that the world will not be ending on December 22nd," said Brody. "There is a lot of science and archaeological(考古学的) research that has been done on the subject and we wanted to be able to convey(传达) it in a way that was easily known by the general public, that people would really be able to understand," he continued.

The video, produced as part of NASA's ScienceCast series, also discounts(漠视) the role that the sun might play in any doomsday event.

"So suppose there was an active region starting from the far side of the sun. It takes about 27 days for such a region to come to the front. And its only storms that are happening on the front will have an effect on earth," said Dr. Guhathakurta, a NASA scientist.

"But we will know that, kind of right away. And we can begin to warn people. This has gone on for billions of years, and our civilisation hasn't been destroyed once."

The Mayans measured time using their knowledge of mathematics and astronomy. They had two calendars, one for astronomy that lasted 365 days. The other calendar is for agriculture, called Tzolkin, with 260 days. To read a date, the Mayans used a complex system where both calendars were combined to reach a final result.

Passage 14

Facing the threat of the Internet, the traditional newspaper is thinking about what it can do to meet the challenge. To make teens get into the habit of reading, the French government is considering what kind of efforts it should pursue.  It seems that the two questions have nothing to do with each other, but a recent announcement made by French President Nicolas Sarkozy has connected these two issues together. The announcement gives an answer to both of them.

President Nicolas Sarkozy announced a rescue plan for France’s ailing print media, including measures to save printing and distribution costs. The plan also gives French teenagers a surprise as their 18-year-old birthday gift: France will offer all 18-year-olds a free daily copy of the newspaper of their choice.

"The habit of reading the press should start at a very young age," Sarkozy said, presenting the conclusion after talking to a group of journalists and officials in Paris. The President said the newspapers themselves would provide free copies for 18-year-olds, while the state would cover the cost of delivering them to many thousands of homes.

The plan is an attempt to introduce teenagers, who frequently only get their news online, to the delights of the printed world.  A similar idea has been tested by L'Ouest-France (法兰西部报) over the past few years.  It offered some 18 to 24-year-olds a free paper once a week for a year.  L' Ouest-France reported that 15% of young people wanted to continue with a paid subscription after the year was over.

People in France welcomed the plan which should get more kids interested in current affairs and make reading be a pastime, as well as rescue the newspaper industry.

American schools are looking for ways to save money on bus transportation because of high fuel prices. More children may have to walk, ride their bikes or find other ways to get to school.

But, as another effect of the high prices, they may not have to go to school as often. Some schools, especially in rural areas, are changing to a four-day week. That means longer days instead of the traditional Monday through Friday schedule.

Beginning in the fall, students in the Maccray school district in Minnesota will be in school Tuesday through Friday. Each school day will be sixty-five minutes longer.

Superintendent(教育厅长)  Greg Schmidt says the district expects to save about sixty-five thousand dollars a year in transportation costs. The district has about seven hundred students living in an area of nine hundred square kilometers.

State officials have approved the plan for three years. They may change their minds before then if learning suffers. In Custer, South Dakota, students have been going to school Monday through Thursday since 1995. Superintendent Tim  Creal says the change has saved an estimated one million dollars over just the past eight years.

But he sees other benefits, too. Students get more instructional time; And activities that used to interfere with classes are now held on non-school days.

He says that in the future, the growth of online classes could make it possible to require even fewer days in school. High fuel prices are driving college students to take more online classes. And in some states, high school students can   take them, too.

A four-day school week sounds like a great idea for students and teachers. But working parents may have to pay for child care for that fifth day. In agricultural areas, though it can mean an extra day of helping on the family ranch.

In New Mexico, the first school district changed to a four-day week in 1974 because of the Arab oil boycott. Now seventeen out of eighty-nine districts use it.

The Lake Arthur School District has just one sixty students. Lake Arthur used a four-day schedule for twelve years. But a few years ago it went back tofive days.

Michael Grossman heads the district. He says two studies there failed to show any real educational improvement using the four-day week.  And he says not much instruction was taking place during the last hour of school, because students were too tired.

1. Which of the following is NOT the effect high effect fuel prices have on American schools?

Passage 16

As the price of a college degree continues to rise, there' s growing evidence that the monetary payoff isn't  quite as big as often advertised. The best estimate now is that a college degree is worth about  $ 300,000 in today' s dollars - nowhere  near the million figure that is often quoted.

"That million number has driven me crazy !" says Sandy Baum, a Skidmore economist who studied the value of a college degree for the College Board last year.

Baum' s research showed that college graduates earn, on average, about $ 20,000 a year more than those who finished their education at high school. Add that up over a 40-year working life and the total differential is about  $  800,000, she  figures. But since much of that bonus is earned many years from now, subtracting out the impact of inflation means that 800,000 in future dollars is worth only about  450,000 in today' s dollars.

Then, if you subtract out the cost of a college degree  about $ 3,000 in tuition and books for students who get no aid and attend public in-state universities and the money a student could have earned at a job instead of attending school, the real net value in today' s dollars is somewhere in the 300,000 range, a number confirmed by other studies.         But, especially these days, that still makes a college degree one of the most lucrative investments a person can make, Baum notes:         Better yet, college graduates can go on to earn advanced degrees, which return even bigger payoffs. The average holder of a bachelor's degree earns about $ 51,000 a year, Baum calculates. But those who've gone on to earn MBAs, law degrees, or other professional degrees earn about $ 100,000 a year.

In addition, Baum finds that there are plenty of other re wards for a degree. The quality of the jobs college graduates get is far better, for example. College graduates are more likely to get jobs with health insurance. And it is easier for them       to find and hold jobs. The unemployment rate for college graduates was just 2.2 percent last year, half the unemployment level of those with only high school  diplomas.

Other researchers have found that the payoff of a degree is especially lucrative for students from low-income families, since the education gives them a chance to break out of low-paying careers.   1. What can be inferred from Paragraph l?

A. The payoff of a college degree is still big enough to match that advertised.

B.  It' s more and more difficult to get a college degree.

C.  The return of a college degree is less than often quoted.

D. The price of a college degree is less than that often quoted.

2. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word  " lucrative" ( in  Paragraph 5) ?

A. attractive     B. worthless     C. approachable       D. balanced

3. How can a college graduate increase his or her yearly income according to the passage?

A.  By getting jobs with health insurance immediately.

B. By going on for higher degrees.

C.  By breaking out of low-paying jobs.

D. By contributing more to his or her community.

4. What is the passage mainly about?

A. College graduates will earn more in the future.

B. The real value of college education is decreasing.

C. College education is enough to ensure you a good life.

 D. How much is that college degree really worth?.

Passage  5

开始时间:____________

Would you want a doctor who got high marks in medical school just for trying hard? Apparently many college students would have no problem with that. They believe students are owed a good grade simply because they put a lot of effort into a class.
The researchers asked more than 800 undergraduates if they agreed or disagreed with some statements. For example: "If I have completed most of the reading for a class, I deserve a B in that course." And: "A professor should not be annoyed with me if I receive an important call during class."
Just 16 percent thought it was OK to take that phone call. But 66 percent agreed that a professor should consider effort and not just the quality of a student's work when deciding grades. And 40 percent thought they should get a B, the second highest mark, just because they did most of the reading for class.
Some experts are not surprised that students often see no difference between effort and results. Social critics like to say that in children's activities these days everyone gets an award just for trying, so no one will feel rejected.
Yet competition to get into the best colleges is fiercer than ever. Students may worry that low grades will keep them out of graduate school or a good job.
And there may be another explanation: pressure from parents to get a good return on the family's investment. These days, college can cost more than a house.
A former teaching assistant recently wrote to the New York Times about his experience with grade expectations. He would try to explain it this way when students asked for a top grade just for studying hard in chemistry class:
What if a baseball player came to spring training and worked harder than all the others, but still could not play well? Would the team accept him anyway, just because he tried so hard?
The students would say no. But most of them would still ask for an A.
1. What does the passage mainly discuss?

AWhether students deserve high marks just for trying hard.

BWhether students are allowed to answer calls in class.

CHow students can get a good grade in the course.

DWhy students put a lot of efforts in their studies.

2. According to the research, most of the students _______.
A. thought it was all right to answer the call during class.
B. thought they did most of the work for class and should get a B.
C. objected to deciding grades only by the quality of a student’s work.
3. Which of the following opinions do social critics agree to about children’s activities?

AThose who are active in the activities can get an award.

BOnly by playing an important role in the activities can you get an award.

CWhoever takes part in the activities can get an award.

DAn award is prepared for anyone who performs best in the activities.

Passage  6

开始时间:____________

Should universities focus on training workers for the next decade or curing diseases for the next century? A group of governors, educators, and CEOs weighed in on the best way universities can prepare for the future. They debated how the U.S. can take the responsibility for research while still preparing students for real jobs.
Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin said that the first thing she thinks about as governor is educating Oklahoma students and strengthening the workforce. So she’s carrying out a program called “America Works: Education and Training for Tomorrow’s Jobs” that aims to “reorganize our education system with the current needs of our employers”.
The state governor added that this new educational approach doesn’t just benefit students and companies, but also improves the state economy. “We’ve been able to attract new companies to our state because of what we’re doing with our universities, because our students are a pipeline for the workforce,” she said. “General Electric Company (one of the world’s biggest companies) is coming to Oklahoma.”
Other group members were more focused on the long-term goals of a research university. Amy Gutmann pointed out that “basic research is the foundation for everything else that happens at a university. And if we don’t do it, nobody else will.”
“And if nobody does that research, we’ll pay the price in health care bills,” argued Vagelos, who is a former CEO of Merck & Co., Inc, one of the largest pharmaceutical (

James Hunt, former North Carolina governor, argued for a happy medium. Effective communication, he said, would help the public see that the research conducted at universities actually serves a practical purpose.
Eli Broad, founder of the Broad Foundations, agreed. “We have to show the public what research has achieved,” he said. “We have to show how it actually goes from basic research to something they can understand.”

Passage  7

开始时间:____________

Parents usually go to malls to find new school supplies for their children. One of the most important things to get during this time is the backpack. Most students choose to bring a backpack because it allows them to have both hands free. This makes the bag less likely to hinder (妨碍)other activities that the person carrying it may be doing at the same time. Here are the ways parents can choose the perfect backpack for school.
How many books will children be carrying to school? How many notebooks should be inside the bag? Parents should know these details before buying a bag for their children. Each situation requires a different bag so it pays to ask children about the expected load.
Do children need special storage for the bag? If they will be carrying a laptop computer inside the new backpack
make sure that parents get a model that’s designed specifically for laptop use. This will protect the computer from bumps and falls that might damage the device if it had less protection.
Are children going to use the bag for a long time? If they want to use a bag for a long time
parents will be better off investing in a good brand that is known for quality. Parents may have to pay extra cash to get the top of the line and the best backpack in the market.
Count the pockets. Backpacks usually come with a lot of pockets
and generallythe more pocketsthe better. This allows children to organize their thingslike pens and pencils inside small pockets.
Picking the perfect school backpack is all about getting  the sweet compromise (
折中)between formfunction and price. Remember to choose the best fit for children’s needs.
1. Why do most students like bringing a backpack?

ABecause it looks beautiful.

BBecause it’s a duty for them to bring it.

BIt’s better for children to have a backpack that has more pockets.

CThe backpacks that have a good brand are more popular with children.

DParents always feel worried when buying a backpack for their children.

Passage  8

Take That Tiger Mom

开始时间:____________

In the ongoing battle between Tiger Moms, French Mamas, and everyone else who wants to know what is the best way to raise their kids, a new study adds evidence that the extreme Tiger-style may do more harm than good.
Authoritarian parents are more likely to end up with disrespectful children with violent behaviors, the study found, compared to parents who listen to their kids with the goal of gaining trust.
It was the first study to look at how parenting styles affect the way teens view their parents and, in turn, how they behave.
The study considered three general styles of parenting. Authoritative parents are demanding and controlling while also being warm and sensitive to their children’s needs.
Authoritarian parents, on the contrary, are demanding and controlling without the appearance of caring, attachment and receptiveness. They take a “my way or the highway” approach to their kids.
Permissive parents, the third group, have warm and receptive qualities, but they set few boundaries and carry out few rules.
Using data on early 600 kids from an ongoing study of middle school and high school students in New Hampshire, researchers from the University of New Hampshire were able to find “my way or the highway” parenting with more violent behaviors like robbery, drug-taking, and attacking someone else with the intention of hurting or killing.
Firm but loving parenting, on the other hand, led to fewer lawbreakers. Permissive parenting, surprisingly, didn’t seem to make much of a difference either.
To explain the link between parenting style and behavior in kids, the researchers suggested that what matters most is how reasonable kids think their parents’ power is. This sense comes when kids trust that their parents are making the best decisions for them and believe that they need to do what their parents say even if they don’t always like how their parents are treating them.
When kids respect the power of their parents, the researchers reported in the journal of Adolescence, their behavior is better. Previous research has also linked firm but caring parenting with kids who have more self-control and independence.
“When children consider their parents to be the reliable figure, they trust the parents and feel that they have a duty to do what their parents tell them to do,” said lead researcher Pick Trinkner. “This is very important as the parent doesn’t have to rely on a system of rewards and punishments to control behavior and the child is more likely to follow the rules when the parent is not physically present.”
1. Tiger Moms and French Mamas are mentioned in the passage to _______.

Bshow the advantage of parenting

Ccompare two types of parenting

Dintroduce the topic

2.  According to the research, what kind of parenting style is likely to cause children’s criminal behaviors?

Atheir parents listen to them totally

Bthey believe in and accept their parents

Ctheir parents are sensitive to their needs

Dtheir parents demand and control their behaviors

Passage  9

开始时间:____________

Failing in something isn’t a really nice feeling, but Scotland’s Fettes College in Edinburgh wants to show its students that failure isn’t something to fear and is actually something to accept willingly!
The boarding school held “failure week” to celebrate taking risks and learning from them. Whether in sports or school, children often face lots of pressure to succeed and do well, and the school was becoming concerned.
“Young people from all walks of life live in a high-pressure environment where they are trying very hard to achieve a level of perfection,” said Sue Bruce, head of personal and social education in the school.
“This week at Fettes we have been focusing on one of the most misunderstood parts of success: failure. While we are often scared of failure, it is important to learn that it is only through failing, often many times, that we learn how to succeed. All through the week, we have looked at the experiences of some of the most successful inventors, artists and businessmen, who failed hundreds, if not thousands of times on their journey to success,” read a letter on Fettes College’s website.
To celebrate failure, students were encouraged to try something they’ve never done before, like playing an instrument or dancing in front of audiences. A number of students stepped up and tried things that they finally failed in, but they had fun and enjoyed the experience. “The concert was extremely enjoyable, proving that we should always try not to worry about failure and have a go!” read another note on the website. Students were also taught about famous people like J.K. Rowling and Richard Branson who failed many times before they finished what they set out to do.
“If they let the fear of failure stop them from doing something, they are actually stopping themselves from learning, developing, and potentially succeeding,” said Bruce.
1. What is the purpose of the boarding school to hold “failure week”?

ATo get the students involved in social activities.

BTo help the students accept and learn from failure.

CTo make the students study even harder.

DTo teach the students how to get relaxed.

2.  During the “failure week” the students could do the following things EXCEPT ___________.

Ataking risks

Blearning from others’experiences

Ctrying something new

Dtrying to entertain themselves

3.  What can we learn from the passage?

AMany successful people are lucky and achieve success easily.

BBecause we are often scared of failure ,we never succeed.

CThe fear of failure can stop the students from learning and succeeding.

DThe students who failed in trying new things felt depressed.

Passage  10

开始时间:____________

If you have a little child, who hates sitting in a car seat, then the FreedomRide is the answer to your problem.
Would you want to be stuck in an unchangeable position every time you’re in the car? No. You wouldn’t.
When an adult sits in a car for any length of time, we stretch, we change the position, we move our legs again and again. We do this without thinking. But kids in a traditional car seat can’t do this. They are stuck in one position, and they can’t move. We move because the circulation of blood needs to be recovered in our legs as we sit in the same position for any longer.
In a traditional car seat, the child can’t move to reduce the pain, so it puts them in anger.
The FreedomRide lets them have a little freedom, and still be safe. The 5-Point Harness(
背带)gives them additional safety over a traditional child car seat.
I am the Webmaster for islandbreeze.com, and when JoeySafe asked us to redo their website, I was attracted by this system. That is because I have two small children, both girls, aged 3 and 4 and we obviously use car seats. I lived in Southern California, and every couple of months, my wife, the girls and I, go to see grandma who lives in Nevada. It’s a 5-hour drive, so the FreedomRide works well. Our trips are so much better now, especially since there is more room in the car without the car seats.
The FreedomRide really did make it easier to go on trips. The only thing you need when you use the JoeySafe instead of your old child car seat is a pillow. Besides, my kids want to take a pillow anyway! As a dad, I feel safe driving with the kids in the FreedomRide. I am a very safety-oriented person.
1. From the text we can infer the FreedomRide is a _______.

Acar seat                                             Bcar for children

Csafety belt                                          Dgame on islandbreeze.com

2. The FreedomRide is likely to be designed for________.

Aa person hating sitting in the car for long

Ban adult often driving a traditional car

Ca child requiring some freedom in the car

Da driver needing comfortable seats

3.  The purpose of the last two paragraphs may be to ________.

Asupport the topic of the child car safety

Bdescribe the advantage of the FreedomRide

Cintroduce the detail of the author’s work and web.

Ddescribe what the author does with his child car seat

4.  The next part following the last paragraph may mention________.

Athe way of ordering                            Bthe way of communicating

Cthe inventor of this product                 Dthe advantage of the product

Passage  11

开始时间:____________

Although I started learning English during my college years, when I entered the States, I only understood two English words “Yes” and “No”. We learned many grammar rules but we could not make the language connections to the real English world. Language frustration worries almost all first generation immigrants. For example, I got a letter from a Chinese-American who has lived in the States for a long time and has a good IT job saying “My 11-year-old girl writes quite well, but as her parents, we could not even read her article.”In addition, my Chinese-American professor friend has difficulty reading a novel. Improving our English skills has become a long journey for all of us. Honestly, if I have a chance, I really want to reach out to everyone in the world who has had a similar experience: learning a second language in adulthood. I wish I could encourage them to speak out about the culture shock, frustration they felt about the differences between West and East.
I have mainly focused on my English writing since 2008 after I found “Literacy Volunteers”, an organization that specially focuses on helping immigrants improve their English. I decided to challenge myself, writing a story like an American. I saw many wonderful Americans there. As soon as I met my teacher Alice, I asked her to be my private language tutor and have taken Tims English class. Every week Alice and I have worked on my English essays sentence by sentence.
To observe the culture differences between West and East, occasionally, I posted a few of my English essays online. I mentioned previously about American culture; when people read the same article or even face the same situation, American and Chinese act very differently. In my viewpoint, these differences make America the strongest country in the world. I know you have the right to express your own opinions, but accusing others without proof is not acceptable.
1. The underlined word “frustration” in the first paragraph means  .

Afailure and setbacks                           Bwords and problems

Cunderstanding and progress                Dslang and idioms

2.  In the passage, “Literacy Volunteers” is  .

Aonly intended to help the Chinese-Americans

Ban organization which is set up to make a profit

Cof great use to people like the author

AAmericans and Chinese are of the same idea about something

Bculture shock only exists between Chinese and Americans

Caccusing others freely can be acceptable in America

Dculture differences have great influence on the people

4.  The purpose of the passage is  .

Ato show how hard a Chinese-American lives in America

Bto share her experience of improving her English

Cto imply grammar rules are not important

Dto warn Chinese-Americans of English

Passage  12

开始时间:____________

There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill There are, however, vastly different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority it must be given over in general language development and writing ability. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely and confidently in writing without holding him back with the complexities of spelling?
If spelling becomes the only focal point of his teacher's interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to "play safe". He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language. That's why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.
I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: "This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is illegible." It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil's technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child's deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centered on the child's ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation to seek improvement.
1. Teachers differ in their opinions about ________.

Athe difficulties in teaching spelling

Bthe necessity of teaching spelling

Cthe complexities of the basic writing skills

Dthe role of spelling in general language development

2. The expression "play safe" probably means “_______”.

Ato write carefully

Bto avoid using words one is not sure of

Cto do as teachers say

Dto use dictionaries frequently

Bstudents will have more confidence in writing

Cstudents will be able to express their ideas more freely

Dstudents will learn to be independent of teachers

4.  The major point discussed in the passage is ________.

Athe relationship between spelling and content of a composition

Bthe importance of developing writhing skills

Cthe correct way of marking compositions

Dthe complexities of spelling

Passage  13

开始时间:____________

My students often tell me they don’t have “enough time” to do all their schoolwork. My reply is often brief –You have as much time as the president. I usually carry on a bit about there being 24 hours per day for everyone, and suggest that “not enough time” is not an acceptable explanation of not getting something done.
Once in graduate school, I tried to justify myself to one of my professors by saying that I was working. His answer to me was, “That’s irrelevant. What’s important is the quality of your work.” Since then I have had time to reflect on the “hard worker” dodge(
伎俩), and I have come to some conclusions – all relevant to the issue of how much time we have.
If you look at the matter analytically, you can identify two parts of the problem. There is, of course, the matter of “time”, which we can think of as fixed. Then there is the issue of “work” during that time, which can vary in intensity. But, as my professor suggested, it’s not diligence but the quality of the product that is important.
That led me to a new idea, the quality of work. That concept is perhaps best explained by a sign I once saw on the wall in someone’s office – Don’t work harder but work smarter! There’s a lot of sense in that idea.
If you can’t get more time, and few of us can, the only solution is to improve the quality of work. That means thinking of ways of getting more out of the same time than we might otherwise get. That should lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since “work” for students usually means “homework”, the expression “work habits” should be read as “learning habits”.
Then, as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading and writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that pay off across the board in all your studies.
1. From the passage, we know that the author is _____.

Aa poet                                               Ban educator

Can editor                                            Da director

2. We can infer from the first two paragraph that we students _____.

AThat is impossible                              BThat is not important

CThat is unbearable                             DThat is not acceptable

Passage  14

开始时间:____________

It’s so difficult to follow the ups and downs of a 2-year-old. One moment he’s beaming and friendly; the next he’s sullen(愠怒的)and weepy, often for no apparent reason. These mood swings, however, are just part of growing up. They are signs of the emotional changes taking place as your child struggles to take control of actions, impulses, feelings and his body.
At this age, your child wants to explore the world and seek adventure. As a result, he’ll spend most of his time testing limits, his own, yours and his environments. Unfortunately, he still lacks many of the skills required for the safe accomplishment of everything he needs to do, and he often will need you to protect him.
When he oversteps a limit and is pulled back, he often reacts with anger and frustration, possibly with a temper tantrum (
发脾气). He may even strike back by hitting, biting and kicking. At this age, he doesn’t have much control over his emotional impulse (冲动). So his anger and frustration tend to erupt suddenly in the form of crying, hitting or screaming. It’s his only way of dealing with the difficult realities of life. He may even act out in ways that unintentionally harm himself or others. It’s all part of being 2.
It’s not uncommon for toddlers to be angels when you’re not around, because they don’t trust people enough to test their limits. But with you, your toddler will be willing to try things that may be dangerous or difficult, because he knows you’ll rescue him if he gets into trouble.
Whatever protest pattern he has developed around the end of his first year will probably persist for some time. For instance, when you’re about to leave him with a sitter, he may become angry and throw a tantrum in anticipation (
预想) of the separation. Or he may cry and cling to you. Or he could simply become subdued and silent. Whatever his behavior, try not to overreact by scolding or punishing him. The best tactic(策略) is to reassure him before you leave that you will be back and, when you return, to praise him for being so patient while you are gone. Take comfort in the fact that separations should be much easier by the time he’s 3 years old.
1. The “ups and downs” (Para. 1) of a 2-year-old refers to ________.

Ahis falling down and standing up

Bhis successes and failures in doing things

Chis good and bad traits

Dhis mood swings

2. A 2-year-old still lacks all of the following EXCEPT _____________.

AA 2-year-old doesn’t know how to express his anger and frustration.

BA 2-year-old often intentionally harms himself or others.

CA 2-year-old depends on his parents to do everything new and challenging.

DA 2-year-old trusts his parents more than other people

4.  When a mother is about to separate with her baby, she’d better __________.

Aleave without the baby’s knowledge

Bmake the baby subdued and silent

Ccomfort the baby that she’ll be back soon

Dignore the baby’s reactions

Passage  15

开始时间:____________

Language changes all the time. The words used by young people in the UK can be very different to those used by adults. These extremely informal words and expressions are known as “slang”. Here are a few examples:
·Instead of using different tag question like isn’t it? Can’t you or don’t they? People use “innit”.e.g. It’s hot here, isn’t it?="It’s" hot here, innit!
·Instead of saying very, really or completely, they use “well”. e.g. I’m well tired.· “Whatever” means “I don’t care”. e.g. A: But the teacher says we can’t leave until we’ve finished. B:Whatever. I’m going.
Nobody uses slang and not everybody likes it. A school in Sheffield, in the north of England, recently instructed its pupils to stop using slang words. The head teacher says that if young people learn to speak ‘correctly’ this will help them get a good job.
When British people use slang, it’s no surprise that some students say they can’t understand native speakers. But perhaps learners don’t need to worry about communicating with native speakers so much. Research shows that most of the English spoken in the world today is spoken between non-native speakers of the language. In fact, when we think about “International English”, there is no such thing as a native or non-native speaker.
How important is it to understand these slang words and expressions? If you watch films or TV, chat online in English, then understanding slang can be very useful. But you probably won’t see much slang in your English exam though. With over seven billion people living on our planet today, it’s easy to think one person’s actions won’t make a difference, however, from personal experience, I can say: each of us is capable of making a difference, however small, to someone’s life.
1. Based on the slang mentioned above, what is the meaning of “I think you got me well wrong.”?

AI think you really hurt my feelings

BI think you totally misunderstood me

CI think you found the completely wrong person

DI think you completely brought the wrong thing

2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

AIt is essential to learn all the British slang

BNative English speakers cannot understand each other well

CEnglish is used more between non-native speakers currently

DYoung people in Britain often use the same slang words as their parents

3.  In the author’s opinion, why shouldn’t English learners be concerned about slangs?

ABritish slangs can hardly come across to English learners

BEnglish learners won’t speak with the native speakers

CEnglish learners can make a difference in the world

DThere are more people who don’t use native slang to communicate

4.  The author may agree to the opinion that _______.

Aindividuals can play a part in others’ life

Bslang learning is an important part of language learning

Cone may express his doubt and disbelief by saying “Whatever”

DEnglish learners may feel difficult to communicate without slang

Passage  16

开始时间:____________

Boys’schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music
Far from the traditional image of a culture of aggressive masculinity(
男子气概)the absence of girls gives boys the chance to develop without pressure to be consistent to a stereotype(传统观念),a US study says
Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their abilities to express their emotions, rather than feeling they had to obey the “boy code” of hiding their emotions to be a “real man”.
The findings of the study are against the received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls

    Tony Little
headmaster of Etonwarned that boys were being ignored by the British education system because it had become too focused on girlsHe criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls
The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when their female peers do better earlier in speaking and reading skills

But in single-sex schools teachers can adjust lessons to boys’ learning style
letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study’s author, Abigail James of the University of Virginia
Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with “boy-focused” approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them
Because boys generally have sharper visionlearn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given “hands-on” lessons where they are allowed to walk around.” Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine(女性的)and prefer the modern type in which violence and sexism are major themes.” James wrote.
Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel they had to give in to a stereotype that men should be “masterful and in charge” in relationships.“In mixed schools boys feel pressed to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means.” the study reported.
1. The author believes that a single-sex school would

Aforce boys to hide their emotions to be “real men”

Bhelp to form masculine aggressiveness in boys

Cencourage boys to express their emotions more freely

Dnaturally place emphasis on the traditional image of a man to boys

2. It is commonly believed that in a mixed school boys

Aperform relatively better

Bgrow up more healthily

Cbehave more responsibly

Dreceive a better education

3.  What does Tony Little say about the British education system?

AIt fails more boys than girls academically

BIt focuses more on mixed school education

CIt fails to give boys the attention they need

DIt places more pressure on boys than on girls

4.  According to Abigail Jamesone of the advantages of single-sex schools is

Ateaching can be designed to promote boys’ team spirit

Bboys can focus on their lessons without being absent-minded

Cboys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in

Dteaching can be adapted to suit the characteristics of boys

Passage  18

开始时间:____________

“The really big concern over the last decade,” according to Dr. David Whitehead, “is the relative loss of opportunities for children to engage in child-led play.” That's true. One of the exhausting aspects of modern parenting is that everything, even doing nothing, has to be purposeful. Now that “parenting” has become a verb — a state of doing, rather than simply being — it can fed unnatural to leave your children to their own devices. Yet it creates spaces in which good things can happen. The psychology lecturer is responding to a survey showing that 80 percent of parents of small children feel under pressure to fill their days with “structured” activities. This, says Dr. Whitehead, is a mistake. Leaving your children to play on their own or with their peers enables them to develop “self-regulation abilities”, which in turn leads to better academic achievement.
One afternoon last autumn, sitting on a bench doing no parenting at all, I suddenly felt I was getting the hang of it.
That afternoon, my sister and I took our children to the park. We had lots to talk about, so we sat down on a bench and drove the children away. After briefly complaining, the cousins wandered off and started jumping into puddles (
水洼).
They jumped and jumped, and then one of them kicked some muddy water at the others. My sister and I, deep in conversation, didn't notice this. So my nephew became more adventurous. He scooped up a handful of mud and threw it on my son's head. My son caught his breath happily, wiped the mud out of his eyes, and threw one back. My nephew, who has a talent for naming things, puffed out his tiny chest and roared: “Let's play Muddikins!”
The rules of Muddikins are simple. You run around throwing mud at each other until everyone is so thickly coated that you can no longer be sure which child is whose. Nothing is learnt from it; nobody is improved. It is pure fun, of the sort that can only happen when parents drop the reins (

Passage  19

开始时间:____________

For high school leavers starting out in the working world, it is very important to learn particular skills and practice how to behave in an interview or how to find an internship (实习). In some countries, schools have programs to help students onto the path to work. In the United States, however, such programs are still few and far behind.
Research shows that if high schools provide career-related courses, students are likely to get higher earnings in later years. The students are more likely to stay in school, graduate and go on to higher education.
In Germany, students as young as 13 and 14 are expected to do internships. German companies work with schools to make sure that young people get the education they need for future employment.
But in America, education reform programs focus on how well students do in exams instead of bringing them into contact with the working world. Harvard Education school professor Robert Schwartz has criticized education reformers for trying to place all graduates directly on the four-year college track. Schwartz argued that this approach leaves the country’s most vulnerable(
易受影响的)kids with no jobs and no skills.
Schwartz believed that the best career programs encourage kids to go for higher education while also teach them valuable practical skills at high school. James Madison High School in New York, for example ,encourages students to choose classes on career-based courses. The school then helps them gain on-the-job
experience in those fields while they’re still at high school.
However, even for teens whose schools encourage them to connect with work, the job market is daunting. In the US, unemployment rates for 16-to-19-year-olds are above 20 percent for the third summer in a row.
“The risk is that if teenagers miss out on the summer job experience, they will become part of this generation of teens who had trouble in landing a job,” said Michael, a researcher in the US.
1. In the author’s opinion, German high school leavers ______.

Aenjoy more career-related courses than that of US

Bneed more career advice from their schools

Cperform better in exams than American students

Dare less brought into contact with the working world

2. According to Robert Schwartz, high school students should _________.

Adirectly carry on higher education

Bget contact with the working world

Cfocus on their performance in exams

Dnot miss out on the summer job experience

3.  The underlined word “daunting” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean “______”.

Aincredible                                          Bmotivating

Cimpressive                                         Ddiscouraging

4. What’s the main idea of the text?

ARemarks on recent US high school education reform

BTips on finding jobs for high school leavers in US.

CThe lack of career-based education in US high schools.

DThe severe situation of unemployment in US.

Passage  20

开始时间:____________

Determined to make school more related to the workplace, Roosevelt High School in Portland, Oregon, developed a school-to-work program. In their first year, students are offered some job pathways in natural resources, human services, health care, business, arts and communication. The following year, each student chooses one of the pathways and examines it in depth, spending three hours a week watching someone on the job. Such a program is also in practice in some other states.
The school-to-work program is built around a partnership. For example, Eastman Kodak, a major employer in Colorado, introduces students to business by helping them construct a model city using small pieces of wood. “The children use the models to decide on the best place to set up schools,” says Lucille Mantelli, director for Eastman Kodak in Colorado. Kodak introduces math by teaching fifth graders to use their pocket money properly. They also provide one-on-one job watching experiences and offer chances of practice for high school juniors and seniors. “Students come to the workplace two or three hours a week,” explains Mantelli. “They do the job for us. We pay them and they get school credits (
学分). We also give them our views on their performance and developmental opportunities.”
In these partnerships, everybody wins. The students tend to take more difficult courses than students in schools that don’t offer such programs. Business benefits by having a better prepared workforce needed in future years. “It’s a way for us to work with the school systems to develop the type of workforce we’ll need in future years,” Mantelli continued. “We need employees who understand the basics of reading and writing. We need them to be good at math and to be comfortable working on a team.”
“Our theory is that they can learn as much outside the classroom as in. All students have the ability to change the world, not just to live in it. To do that, they have to know how to solve problems and use critical thinking skills. We need to encourage them to dream about jobs that go beyond what they see today,” concludes a school-to-work program organizer.
1. Using the example of Eastman Kodak in Colorado, the writer shows us ____.

Awhat role the business plays in the program

Bwhy the students get paid for their jobs

Cwhere the students have their math class

Dwhat the school decides to do

2.  The main purpose of the school-to-work program is to _____.

Amake what students learn in school related to the workplace

Bintroduce new job opportunities to schools

Cimprove relations between students and teachers

Doffer students more difficult courses

3.  According to the text, Lucille Mantelli is ____.

Aa math teacher

Ba company manager

Ca school designer

Da program organizer

Passage 1

开始时间:____________

Scottish customs and traditions cover a very wide range of topics. Everything from kilts to golf, bagpipes to whisky, Celtic cr osses to Protestant missionary work, the "second sight" to Nessie.

The history of the bagpipes takes us a long way back from today and far away from Scotland. Everyone thinks about Scotland when they hear the word “bagpipe”, but this instrument is so old that true age and origin are unknown. In some historical documents it is written that the pipes were first played somewhere around Asia Minor in 1000 BC. Also, it is said, by some, that "Emperor Nero played the "Pipes" not the fiddle, while Rome burned." Some 'form' of bagpipes are used in many European countries but in Scotland they have become an integral part of the country's culture. Scotland is the ancestral home of the "Great Highland Bagpipes" known to all as the "Great Pipes".

A Pipe band is one thing that every visitor of Scotland wants to see. These are groups of men (in modern times it can be both men and women); each group has matching skirts, fancy jackets and strange little hats. They march around squeezing the air out of big tartan bags (known as bagpipes) and blowing it in again through a pipe attached to the bag. This results in a racket known as "t he skirl o' the pipes" which is almost indistinguishable from the noise made by the haggis during the mating season. These pipe bands often turn out to be Australians, not Scots at all!

The tartan kilt has long been the most recognizable cultural tradition of the Highland Scots, but just like the other symbols, kilts have also an unknown origin. One sure fact is that the wearing of the kilt has been developed in the 19th century during the reign of Queen Victoria. It had been created for some rational reasons: men who wore it could make very quick moves, wade through rivers and shelter in huts, woods and rocks, etc.

There is a question which will always linger next to the word ‘kilt’ and that is: Do people who wear kilts have underwear or not? Even though there are lots of people who consider this immoral, the tradition says that underwear should not be present if one is dressed in a kilt, the only exception being the participation to some sportive games and the presence of women. In the 50’s, soldiers were verified if they wore underwear by their sergeants who used a long stick that had in the top a mirror.

Other two reasons for which Scotland is famous are its traditional food and of course, whisky. No one could argue that traditional Scottish cooking has produced one of the great cuisines of the world. The quality of the ingredients has always been excellent: the world's finest seafood including shellfish, lobster and crabs, and varieties of fish too numerous to mention; succulent lamb and beef; soft fruit including raspberries, strawberries an d blackberries and a host of locally produced types of cheese, including cheddar from Ayrshire and Galloway. The national dish is the haggis, a type of food that combines mutton with other ingredients and which is served with turnip and potatoes.

Whisky has been produced in Scotland for hundreds of years. It is well known that the Irish created this alcoholic drink, but the Scots were the ones who brought it to the form that we drink today. Whisky refers to a broad category of alcoholic beverages that are distilled from grains and aged in oak casks. The name means water of life.

Nervous uncertainty surrounds the fate(命运) of US journalist Daniel Pearl, with no clear communication from his kidnappers (绑匪) and no sign of his where abouts after three separate police searches for his body in the troublesome port city Karachi, Pakistan.

Pearl, a 38-year-old Wall Street Journal reporter, disappeared two weeks ago on his way to an interview in Karachi. An email allegedly from his kidnappers contained four photos of him and a variety of demands, including one for the release of Pakistani prisoners being held at the US naval base in Cuba.

The searches were started last Friday night by an email claiming that Pearl had been killed and his body thrown“in the graveyards of Karachi.”

Pearl has worked for The Wall Street journal for 12 years and is now their South Asia bureau chief. He was born in Princeton, New Jersey and graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in communications.

Passage 3

开始时间:____________

Student participation(参与) in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the student in many courses. Some professors base part of the final grade on the student's oral participation. Although there are formal lectures during which the student has a passive role(i.e., listening and taking notes), many courses are organized around classroom discussions, student questions, and informal lectures. In graduate discussions the professor had a “manager” role and the students make presentations and lead discussions. The students do the actual teaching in these discussions.

A professor's teaching method is another factor (因素) that determines the degree and type of student participation. Some professors prefer to control discussion while others prefer to guide the class without controlling it. Many professors encourage students to question their ideas. Students who object to the professor's point of view should be prepared to prove their positions.

In the teaching of science and mathematics, the controlling mode of instruction is generally traditional, with teachers presenting formal lectures and students taking notes. However, new educational trends have turned up in the humanities and social sciences in the past twenty years. Students in edcuation, society, and history classes, for example, are often required to solve problems in groups, design projects, make pressentations, and examine case studies. Since some college or university courses are“practical” rather than theoretical, they pay more attention to “doing”for themselves.

Cinformal lecture courses  Ddiscussion courses

2.From the passage we know that education in the humanities and society.

Ahas not changed much  Bpay attention to students' studying instead of teachers' teaching

Athese professors are often not well prepared before class

Bthese professors want to strees“doing”

Cthese professors want to test the students' abilities

Dthese professors are not willing to teach theory

4.Which of the following sentences is true according to the passage?

AStudent participation is not common in the classroom in many courses like society.

BSome professors want to control the classroom discussion.

CSome professors usually want the students to take part in the teaching of science and mathematics.

Passage 5

western artist R.V. (Ron) Jahns creates his unique western wildlife paintings by making into his vast experience of true life western experiences out in the mountains and on the trails of the great Northwest. Ron paints from the heart and his experience as a cowboy in the west and out on the trails. Ron has a particular passion for the mountains from Eastern Oregon to Alaska and draws from his many years of mountain adventures as inspiration for his western paintings. Born and raised on a ranch, this cowboy artist is well knowledgeable with the subjects of his Western art. Ron struggles for historical accuracy in his western cowboy paintings when an artist misrepresents the facts about cowboy life in the west!

Living in Alaska for 17 years added a new element to Ron's western art. As a hunter and fisherman he observed the wildlife in its natural setting and has conveyed this spirit to his canvas.  Ron's western art can be viewed throughout the United States, in Europe and through occasional private showings. You can find western wildlife paintings by Ron at various art shows throughout the year. For a list of art shows the Cowboy Artist will be attending, visit his Art Show page. Although a self-taught western artist, Ron himself has taught painting in colleges and through private lessons. Ron is quite a storyteller and the last of an old kind of cowboy poets and western storytellers. If you've met Ron at the Flea Markets in Sumpter, Oregon then you no doubt have already had a taste of his knack for telling tall tales and sharing his original cowboy poems of true life on the ranch.

Passage 6

Still life paintings as one of the most important kinds of Western paintings mainly describe static, lifeless objects as the subject matter for study and manifestation. From a historical point of view, the earliest still-life drawing can be traced back to ancient Egypt and the Roman period, but at that time it mainly serve as a foil in paintings. It was not until the sixteenth century that still-life painting emerged as an independent style of western paintings, often with various types of religious meanings, such as the transience of life and the passage of time, symbolized by the hourglass, candle, etc. The French painter Chardin brought still life paintings to the peak of development in the eighteenth century. The subject matter was then expanded to simple, daily life objects such as kitchen tools and food, until the post-impressionist painter Cèzanne created in his still life paintings, a sense of architectural orderliness which breaks through the illusive play of light and colors by Impressionist painters, and directed a shift of focus to the solid structure and form. It was only then that still life paintings became an independent school to take its place alongside with Cubism and Expressionism in modern Western art schools. Lin Fengmian, standing in the pioneering front of modernizing Chinese painting in the turn of the twentieth century, created his own still lives, by exploiting the spatial structures of both Chinese and Western paintings, making a successful attempt in synthesizing the aesthetic ideologies of the Chinese with those in the West.

Passage 7

The 73rd annual National Cherry Blossom Festival began in Washington, D.C. on March 29 Thousands of cherry trees have been in pink and white blossom all over the city.

A Growing Friendship

The two-week festival celebrates Japan's gift of 3,000 cherry trees to the United States in 1912. The trees symbolized the growing friendship between the two nations. On March 27, 1912, First Lady Helen Herron Taft, wife of then President Howard Taft, and Viscountess Chinda, the wife of the Japanese ambassador, planted the first two cherry trees on the north bank of the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C. Later Japan presented her with 3,800 more cherry trees to the USA.

The cherry trees turned out to be helpful to Japan as well. After floods washed away the country's Yoshino cherry trees in the early 1980s, Japan collected more than 800 cuttings from cherry trees near the Tidal Basin to replace those that were lost.

Growing a Festival

The festival began in 1935 as a three-day celebration. In 1994, it was extended to two weeks, to make time for the Cherry Blossom Princess and Cherry Blossom Queen programs, cultural shows, tours, sporting events and exhibits.

Today, the festival has announced the beginning of spring. Over the years, it has brought hundreds of thousands of people from around the world to the area.

_________

This year, the National Park service will host the first-ever "cherry chit-chat" runs in the early morning for three days during the festival. The three-and-a-half mile tour will start at the Washington Monument and end at the Tidal Basin. This event will give visitors a chance to take a closer look at the "indicator tree," which strangely blooms a full week before the other cherry trees.

The Great Finale

The ending day will hit the streets for the Parade of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. It's one of the largest public activities of the year. There are stars from movie, television and Broadway along with bands, old-fashioned cars and big balloons.

Passage 8

开始时间:____________

Chinese Paintings

Ancient Chinese paintings can be traced back to as early as 5,000 to 6,000 years ago, when people began to use minerals to draw simple pictures of animals, plants, and even human beings on rocks and produce drawings of amazing designs and decorations on the surface of potteries and later bronze containers.

However, only a few of the works have survived over time. The earliest drawings that have been preserved till today were produced on paper and silk, which were burial articles with a history of over 2,000 years. However the arts were inherited and masterpieces from those talented Chinese painters are also valuable collections. You may be able to find your own favorite piece during your travel in China.

As far as the subject is concerned, Chinese paintings fall into several categories, such as figure paintings, landscapes, and flower-and-bird paintings. European paintings, introduced into China in 17th century, were called "Western paintings," and the traditional local works, "the Chinese paintings." As the representative of Eastern paintings, Chinese paintings greatly differ from the Western counterpart in terms of contents, forms, and styles. The following will give you a more vivid picture of the exotic Chinese paintings.

Colored Painting (gongbi) and Water-Ink Painting (xieyi)

In terms of drawing skills, Chinese paintings can be categorized into two styles: colored paintings and water-ink paintings, with the former dominant before the 12th century by professional or craftsman painters, and the latter in and after the 12th century by literati painters.

A perfect integration of poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal engraving

Traditional Chinese paintings perfectly integrate poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal engraving, all of which are necessary components. As Chinese is an ideographic language system, most of the Chinese characters in ancient times were produced according to the shapes or meanings, which naturally generated an artistic form of calligraphy closely connected with painting.

Figure paintings, landscapes and flower-and-bird paintings

Rich evidences can be found in fine-art archeology that paintings with people as the subject turned out to be the earliest one among all the categories of Chinese paintings and used to enjoy great development. Dating back to the primitive age, ancestors drew pictures of human beings and animals on walls and rocks with white stalks, red bauxite, or charcoal.

Tips:

Ancient Chinese paintings can be traced back to as early as 5,000 to 6,000 years ago, when people began to use minerals to draw simple pictures of animals, plants, and even human beings on rocks and produce drawings of amazing designs and decorations on the surface of potteries and later bronze containers.

Passage 11

After four months running, the national children’s singing competition has come to an end in Beijing, but the wonderful songs and music still remain in the air.

One of the ideas growing out of the event is to sing China’s Tang poems. The movement has given great inspiration to those who compose songs for children.

Excerpts from well-known poems of Li Bai, one of China’s greatest poets, are perfectly mixed with music of the 21st century. As these children sing, it’s how they find pictures and songs in the ancient poems.

“Reading Poems of Tang Dynasty” is a golden award winner of the 2007 national composing competition for children’s song. Winning again at this year’s nationwide children’s singing competition, the song will be collected in an album which contains another 20 pieces inspired by the famous ancient poems.

Famous composer Gu Jianfen says there’s no better way to attract the younger generation than through singing, especially when asking them to memorize the legacy of their ancestors.

Gu Jianfen, composer, said, “When we recorded the song, we discovered how involved the children were. Their sincere feelings and true thoughts let us learn the innocence of young hearts. For me, nothing is more precious than this.”

Singing is also one great way for those young minds to sing out their gratitude to their parents, teachers and those who care for them. Those kinds of songs have taken a big slice of the winning pieces at this year’s competition.

Tips:

legacy n. 遗产 innocence n. 单纯 gratitude n. 感激 slice n. 部分

Passage 12

开始时间:____________

Golden age of Chinese poetry

Yue fu are Chinese poems composed in a folk song style. The term literally means “music bureau”, a reference to the government organization originally charged with collecting or writing the poems. The lines are of uneven length, though five characters is the most common. Each poem follows one of a series of patterns defined by the song title. The term covers original folk songs, court imitations and versions by known poet.

From the 2nd century AD, the yue fu began to develop into shi —the form which was to dominate Chinese poetry until the modern era. The writers of these poems took the five-character  line of the yue fu and used it to express more complex ideas. The shi poem was generally an expression of the poet’s own personal rather than the adopted characters of the yue fu; many were romantic nature poems heavily influenced by Taoism.

The term gushi (“old poems”) can refer either to the first, shi poems, or more generally to the poems written in the same form by later poets. Gushi in this latter sense are defined essentially by what they are not; that is, they are not jintishi. The writer of gushi was under no formal constraints other than line length and rhyme . A rhyme is a repetition of similar sounds in two or more words and is most often used in poetry and songs. The word “rhyme” may also refer to a short poem, such as a rhyming couplet or other brief rhyming poem such as nursery rhymes.

Jintishi, or regulated verse , developed from the 5th century. By the Tang dynasty, a series of set tonal patterns had been developed, which were intended to ensure a balance between the four tones of classical Chinese in each couplet : the level tone, and the three deflected tones (rising, falling and entering). The Tang dynasty was the high point of the jintishi.

Tips:

bureau n. uneven adj. 不均匀的 imitation n. 模仿 version n. 译本 dominate vt. 支配 constraint n. 约束 couplet n. 对句

The term literally means “music bureau”, a reference to the government organization originally charged with collecting or writing the poems.

本句中,a referencemusic bureau的同位语,是对前面的解释。originally charged with collecting or writing the poems为过去分词短语作定语。

句意:这个术语从字面上是指音乐府门,是最初负责收集和写诗的部门机构的参考。

Jintishi literally means "modern-style poetry" in Chinese.  Actually, Jintishi is nothing modern at all.  In fact, its origin could be traced as far back as the Six Dynasties (222-589 A.D.) when Shen Yue and ZhouYong first outlined the rules governing the tone and rhythm of Chinese characters. However, it was not until the Tang Dynasty that Jintishi was fully developed and adopted as a popular poetic form in Chinese classical poetry.

Passage 13

开始时间:____________

Li Bai and Du Fu

Li Bai  and Du Fu  both lived during the Tang Dynasty. They are regarded by many as the greatest of the Chinese poets. Over a thousand poems are attributed to Li Bai, but the authenticity of many of these is uncertain. He is best known for his yue fu poems, which are intense and often fantastic . He is often associated with Taoism: there is a strong element of this in his works, both in the sentiments they express and in their spontaneous tone. Nevertheless, his gufeng (“ancient airs”) often adopt the perspective of the Confucian moralist.

Much like Mozart, many legends exist on how Li Bai effortlessly composed his poetry, even (or some say, especially) when drunk; his favorite form is the jueju, of which he composed some 160 pieces. Using striking, unconventional imagery, Li Bai is able to create elegant pieces to use fully the elements of the language. His use of language is not as erudite as Du Fu’s but equally effective, impressing through imagination and a direct connection of a free-spirited character with the reader. Li Bai’s interactions with nature, friendship, and his acute observations of life inform his best poems. Some of the rest, like Changge xing, records the hardships or emotions of common people. Like the best Chinese poets, Li Bai often avoids translation.

Since the Song dynasty, critics have called Du Fu the “poet historian”. The most directly historical of his poems are those commenting on military tactics or the successes and failures of the government, or the poems of advice which he wrote to the emperor.

Tips:

authenticity n. 真实性 intense adj. 热情的 sentiment n. 情感 spontaneous adj. 自发的 erudite adj. 博学的 tactic n. 策略

Jueju is a style of jintishi, or "Modern shi poetry", that grew popular among Chinese poets in the fifth to sixth centuries in the Tang Dynasty. Jueju poems are always quatrains(四行诗), with each line consisting of five or seven syllables each. The five-syllable-long form is called wujue and the seven-syllable-long form qijue .

Passage 14

Like many other ancient cultures, China possesses an impressive and celebrated literary heritage. The master poets of Tang Dynasty (618-907), for example, are rightfully known as some of the world's best poets.

It was therefore surprising and somewhat disappointing that, upon coming to China to teach writing at a university in mid-2006, I discovered that the average Chinese learner was far more interested in King Kong than the subtle yet profoundly insightful poetry of the Tang Dynasty genius Li Bai; or that when I mentioned Mulan (the heroine of an early Chinese), I was told about a Disney animated adaptation of the story. Have the Chinese--especially the youth--lost all interest in the literary masterpieces of their own language as a result of the greedy impact of popcorn Western culture?

My fears were somewhat decreased when I found out that Chinese primary school students still learn Tang Dynasty poems; that cultural events associated with the lives of literary icons--such as the Dragon Boat Festival--are celebrated each year; and that sites commemorating writers and their words--such as the Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan, the inspiration for many generations of Chinese poets--are popular and well-preserved attractions. I was also pleased to gradually discover that not all Chinese youths are as crazy about throwaway popular culture as it first appeared and that many are in fact very enthusiastic about great poets and novelists.

But the problem remains that I have not been able to discover anything altogether new or exciting about either classical or contemporary Chinese writing in spite of having lived in a Chinese metropolis for more than a year.

Tips:

subtle adj. 微妙的 profoundly adv. 深深地 icon n. 肖像;偶像 commemorate vt. 纪念

Passage 15

开始时间:____________

In Chinese literature, the Tang period (618-907) is considered the golden age of Chinese poetry. Tang Shi San Bai Shou [300 Tang Poems] is a compilation of poems from this period made around 1763 by Heng-tang-tui-shi [Sun Zhu] of the Qing dynasty.

Sun’s motivation for compiling the collection sprang from his dissatisfaction with the then popular textbook, the Qian Jia Shi [Poems by A Thousand Poets], an earlier collection from the Tang and Sung (960-1279) periods . Sun made his own selection of Tang poems based on their popularity and effectiveness in cultivating character.

Because it represented equally well each of the classical poetic forms and because it represented the best works by the most prominent Tang poets, ___________________. It has been used for centuries since to teach elementary students to read and write, and also in cultivating character.

Sun’s collection is still a classic today, its popularity undiminished. Nearly every Chinese household owns a copy of Tang Shi and poems from it are still included in textbooks and to be memorized by students. We would like to make this World Wide Web version of the poems as a testimony to its compiler’s intent : “ Learning Tang poems three hundred by heart, you can chant poems though you know not the art .”

Passage 17

Almost 300 students at the four top high schools in Beijing have given up plans to sit college entrance exams in favor of studying overseas for the international experience. The capital's other three top high schools -- No Four, No Eight and No 11 high schools -- also have overseas study classes.

Fan Xiaozhou, 18, is a student in the overseas study class at the Experimental High School Attached to Beijing Normal University. She is waiting for an offer from the 12 universities she applied to in the US. Her first choice is Pennsylvania State University.

“For students who take university entrance exams, they only need to study hard for the final year of high school. The next four years of university life would be stress-free,” she said, “But if I get the chance to study in the US, I will have to study hard right now and I'll also cherish every moment there.”

A key feature of overseas study classes is that English and Chinese culture are essential parts of the curriculum(课程). There are additional courses created by the Advanced Placement Program in the US, but mostly the syllabus(课程提纲)deals with reviewing knowledge learned during the previous two years of high school education. The emphasis is always on preparing for the university entrance examination, according to Su.

Most of the students in the class have beyond average academic performance and some also have overseas study experiences.

It was reported that in the past three years, more than 30,000 high school graduates chose to study overseas instead of taking university entrance exam.

More than 100,000 students sat in the national college entrance exams in Beijing last year, 16,000 less than the previous year.

Tips:

There are additional courses created by the Advanced Placement Program in the US, but mostly the syllabus(课程提纲)deals with reviewing knowledge learned during the previous two years of high school education.

Passage 18

开始时间:____________

In 2006, the number of Chinese students studying abroad reached 134,000. More than twenty countries are selected as “the most favored nations by Chinese students for studying abroad in 2006.” These countries are attracting students in different ways.

In recent years, the United States has become so attractive for many Chinese students with its first-class institutions and universities, and superpower status in the world. This was mainly due to the relaxation of visa restrictions for international students in 2005 and 2006, a move that promoted the development of its education market and caught the attention of more Chinese students.

The natural environment has always been a key factor in attracting students from other countries. Canada, known as “America’s backyard”, is the most inhabitable country, as well as the world’s most amazing nation for overseas study. Canada has been attracting a large number of Chinese students for years.

New Zealand has also welcomed more and more students to study, offering a good living environment and desirable lifestyle. It has eight outstanding colleges and universities, creating better hopes for immigration after students graduate. Students can apply for visas even without taking an English proficiency test. This is an important reason why more international students intend to study in the country.

An elegant environment, bilingual lifestyle and international academic atmosphere are the most attractive advantages of study in Malaysia. Bilingual language ability has been a fundamental requirement for residents in this country. Students in the country can benefit from a world-class education, with a guarantee of an excellent degree of higher education. Residents living in the most inhabitable country in the Asia-Pacific region, enjoy life’s real pleasures.

The year of 2007 is the “year of China” in Japan and the year of “Chinese-Korean exchange”. Frequent communications and exchanges between the governments of both countries have encouraged students to study in the two countries. Japan offers a variety of preferential(优惠) policies to Chinese students that create unique conditions for international students to continue research and study in the country. In 2006, more and more Chinese students chose to study in Japan and Korea.

Some countries, such as Russia, the Ukraine and German have become destinations for more Chinese students in recent years because they offer high quality education at a low cost. The German education system has been the number one choice for many students. However, from the beginning of 2006, it began to adjust its policy on waiving(放弃)full tuition fees. Therefore, international students studying in Germany would be able to enjoy a free tuition policy for only a few years to come.
